Your Help, Please

Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 9:42 pm | Comments off

I've been trying to think of a new name for my blogging software, currently called xBlog. I really don't like that name all that much, and as I'm hoping to have it to the public beta stage soon, I'd like to come up with a new name. If you have any suggestions for a name, please go ahead and leave them in a comment. I'll start by telling you that I don't really want "blog" to show up in the name, at all. So you get a feel for the type of names I like, I think out of all the blogging software/services, I most like the name TypePad, probably followed by WordPress. Anyway, if anyone comes up with something with an available domain name, please let me know.

What sets your blog software apart from other people's? Better standards support? Better multi-user support? Easy installation? If you make a list of what's unique about your software, it might help you come up with a name that will set it apart from the others.

MonoLog (sounds like monologue, which means "A composition, written or oral, by a single individual.", only logue is changed to log to suit the purpose) ;)

Btw, monolog.org and monolog.com are both taken, but monolog.net isn't...

As we're on the topic is there an ETA for xBlog Pro or what new name your going to name it? I currently run xBlog Lite at my site and love it =).

For the topic at hand I don't currently have any ideas but I'll think on it long and hard and get back to you.

I just thought of something quick, maybe something along the lines of 'shoutIt'. Meh, I don't have any good ones.

Well, I was going to suggest Brillig (as in Lewis Carrol's Jabberwocky), but .com, .net and .org all seem to be taken.

And I've got to agree with Paul, Monolog sounds good. I think Daniel just may have hit on it.

Hmm, I think something that doesn't include his name would be better :p

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. MonoLog is pretty good, the only thing with that is monologue implies spoken rather than written, no?

Also, as Scott said, something without my name would be better. If I were only using it on this site and wasn't going to make the script available to download it may be different, but since that's not the case, I think something more professional sounding is in order.

Like Tom, I like your WebDev name "Pyro." I know I am unimaginative, but the best I can come up with are...
Perhaps PyroPad, PyroLog or PyroPress?

If you have plans of modifying xBlog into a CMS, or a BB/Forum (a "lite" version based on xBlog), you may want to stick with a name "ABCD" + "substring" instead of something like "Monolog."

Ryan,

A monolog is not just spoken. It can be a speech or composition (from the American Heritage definition).

A monolog is also defined as a solilquy, which has the additional connotation of "discourse in which a character reveals his or her thoughts when alone...." I find this appropriate for blogs because, at one level, they are individual pursuits. Think of Shakespeare - Hamlet delivers his soliloquy alone, yet the audience is there to observe it.

My suggestions: Soapbox, and PyroTechnichal. I also like Monolog and PyroPress.... they're catchy, you know? I can see why you want to junk xBlog... not very memorable- and definitely doesn't have much identity. ;)

A name has been chosen. A domain has been registered. More details to come on Monday.

Thanks all for your help. While none of the names suggested in the comments were the one that was chosen (not even MonoLog), perhaps they provided the creative spark for the one that was.

And, since people have been asking, I'll try to figure a rough ETA. At this point I can't give any definites, but perhaps I'll lay a roadmap of what needs to be done before the public beta release. Now that I've chosen a name that I like, I have a feeling I'll be more diligent in working on it.

Call it "Brillog". A play on your name, get it?
Anyway, your articles are excellent, thanks for the influence with CSS. I've learned more from them than any book or e-book.

Very cool Ryan. I am still waiting to see if yours is going to convince me to not switch to Wordpress when it comes out. =)

Ah, that's evil; "more details later"... but, still, I'm surprised you didn't take MonoLog- you must've had one heluva flash of insight in order to come up with a better one.
